Meet Roger
Roger Warwick is a self-taught American artist, born in Boston, Massachusetts at the Lying-In Hospital. His father’s side of the family was in the grocery business dating back to 1837, while his mother’s roots trace back to early American history through the Stoughton family of New York City.
Roger grew up in Boston, Dover, and Falmouth, Massachusetts. This mix of city life, countryside, and coastal living helped spark his lifelong interest in art, people, and the quiet observation of life.
Over the years, Roger has worn many hats—stockbroker, grocer, restaurateur, home and road builder. But painting and drawing have always been a constant, serving as both an escape and a form of meditation.
From Roger:
“When I paint, I’m often just playing with color. I enjoy painting island houses in the colonial style—whether from Harbor Island, New Plymouth, Cape Cod, or my imagination. I’ve spent time in Bermuda, where we were once gifted a home. That experience gave me a real appreciation for the vibrant limestone and stucco colors of Bermudian architecture.
I also paint scenes inspired by camping trips with my son—especially tents on the beach, which have become a favorite subject. Often, I create places I’d like to be.
Another subject I enjoy is dogs. These are usually commissioned portraits of real pets. At first, I thought pet portraits were a step down—but I quickly realized how much fun they are. It’s a chance to get to know the animal, and it brings a lot of joy.
And then there are the bears—cartoon-style characters I started drawing when my son was young. They’re often doing very human things, like boating with a wizard’s son. These pieces help loosen me up when I’m feeling stuck creatively. Lately, every one of them features a pot of tea.”
